Free 5G until January 31, 2024 in Portugal
According to the latest information, MEO, NOS and Vodafone must offer 5G by January 31, 2024. After this period, Portuguese will have to pay for this service.
It should also be remembered that MEO, NOS and Vodafone, which have acquired at least 50 MHz in the 3.6 GHz band, are obliged to install external macro or small cell base stations whenever requested by the following entities:
- Hospitals and health centres;
- Universities, other higher education institutions and other entities of the national scientific and technological system;
- Ports and airports.
- military institutions;
- Entities that manage or promote business parks, industrial parks or business location areas.

According to ANACOM, all municipalities already have 5G base stations installed. The number of fifth generation base stations installed increased by 12%, equivalent to 839 new stations, bringing the total to 7,831 stations.
