The Center for Zoonoses Disease Control (CCZ) in São José do Rio Preto (SP) conducts free tests for visceral leishmaniasis in dogs.
The measure is part of the visceral leishmaniasis prevention and control campaign, implemented by the state health department, and runs through August 17.
According to the City of Rio Preto, dog testing must be scheduled by phone (17) 3231-6494. Exams are conducted by CCZ, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The campaign is held annually and aims to raise awareness of the disease that affects dogs and humans.
Transmission of the parasite that causes the disease occurs through the bite of a hay mosquito. Therefore, according to the city, the control of the insect is an important preventive measure.
The guiding principle is to keep yards clean, trim trees, remove weeds and leftover foliage, and eliminate environments conducive to the presence of mosquitoes.
As prevention in dogs, one measure is the use of an insect repellent collar.
The main symptoms of the disease in dogs are flaking and skin ulcers, dark and brittle hair, fever, muscle atrophy, weakness, loss of appetite, lesions in the eyes and on the tips of the ear claws, and a worsening increase in the nails.
If in doubt, take the animal to the vet.
