After Princess Diana married Prince Charles, in 1981, a piece of cake from the ceremony was sold at auction on Wednesday. The buyer paid 1,850 pounds, or about 2,185 euros, for the chip he kept for 40 years.

The piece of cake was in the possession of Moira Smith, an employee of Queen Elizabeth II’s mother at the time, and it belonged, according to auction house Dominic Winter, to one of the 23 official wedding cakes, which had a royal cake. The seal is made in sugar. (see photo gallery)

The slide has been preserved on film paper, and in 2008, the Smith family sold it to a private collector, and this year put it up for auction.

The cake was purchased by Jerry Leighton in Leeds, who would put it in his will, along with his estate, to be donated to charities after his death.

However, the auction house warns that tasting this cake, which has received bids from people all over the world, may not be a good idea.

Remember that Prince Charles and Diana married on July 29, 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The couple separated 11 years later, in 1992, and the divorce became official in 1996. Diana died a year later, in 1997.
