US lawmakers accuse Amazon officials of lying at hearings

A group of US congressmen from the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee wrote a letter to Amazon CEO Andrew Gacy accusing Amazon officials, including Jeff Bezos, of lying during parliamentary hearings.

The letter, dated Sunday, comes after several reports revealed that the e-commerce giant uses data from third-party sellers for the benefit of its product line and manipulates the results of surveys and practices that ensure the group does not use it.

“At best, these investigations confirm that Amazon officials deceived the commission. At worst, they reveal that the representatives [da Amazon] They could lie in Congress, possibly in violation of federal criminal law,” wrote Democrats Jerrold Nadler, David Cislin and Pramila Jayapal, as well as Republicans Ken Buck and Matt Gaetz.

Congressmen are asking Amazon to provide “defensive evidence” to confirm the earlier testimony, saying they have the right to urge the Justice Department to open an investigation.

In addition to Jeff Bezos, who stepped down as CEO in July, the letter refers to Amazon general counsel David Zapolsky, associate general counsel Nate Sutton, and Brian Hausman, vice president of public policy.

The four officials testified or spoke in Congress between 2019 and 2020 as part of the Judiciary Committee’s investigation into the competitive practices of Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google.

A company spokesperson responded in a note sent to AFP: “Amazon and its leaders did not deceive the commission. We deny and seek to recover the facts related to the inaccurate articles in question.”
