The Ball – Jorge Jesus in Dragao: From Knockout to Knockout (Benfica)

Published on

It was in the home of Dragão, but still in the old Estádio das Antas, where Jorge Jesus suffered the biggest defeat of his career: 6-2 when he visited FC Porto led by Felgueiras. It happened on February 11, 1996, and in half a dozen goals scored by the Whites and the Blues, Drolovic scored again, in addition to Joao Manuel Pinto, Quenzinho, Rui Barros and Jorge Cotto. Everyone scored in the afternoon when Lewis was still falling twice. Never before has a Jorge Jesus team conceded six goals. After that it almost happened again and again against Dragão and at the new stadium already, with a 5-0 imposition on Benfica.

It wasn’t expressive, but nevertheless, the most painful thing (perhaps even one of his most painful coaching career) was 2012/13, the Kelvin moment, author of the goal that defined the league this season, putting FC Porto ahead. The end game when it was the eagle that drove it until then. It was this goal that prompted the red coach to kneel in the middle of the Studio do Dragao while Vitor Pereira, the coach of FC Porto, celebrated.

The coach already embodied in the matches at FC Porto was in the service of nine different teams: Villegeras, e Amadora, in Setúbal. V. Guimarães, U. Leiria, Belenenses, SC Braga, Benfica, Sporting. Ali saw that their teams score 19 goals, but suffered 42. They won only with Benfica and Sporting, drew on four occasions and suffered 13 defeats. It was with the Belenenses who scored for the first time at the home of rivals Porto, in 2007, with the restelo blue crest catching the Porto blue with Ze Pedro celebrating a draw after Postiga scored for the home team.

Jesus’ last victory over the championship at Porto occurred with the whip of the Sporting coach, in the first season with a lion on his chest: he won 3-1. His team had never visited the Dragons, winning more than two league goals.
