KIEV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday (25 local date, Thursday night in Brazil) the general military mobilization of the counter-offensive to the Russian invasion, according to a decree posted on his website.

The measure will affect people subject to “compulsory military service and reservists,” and will remain in effect for 90 days in all regions of Ukraine, it says.

Also according to Zelensky, at least 137 Ukrainian citizens died on the first day of the Russian invasion of the country. “137 heroes, our compatriots” were killed, the president said in a video posted on the government’s website, adding that another 316 Ukrainians were wounded in the fighting.

On Thursday (23) Russian forces attacked Ukraine. This is the largest military operation within a European country since World War II. The Russian invasion began, this morning, with air strikes across the country, including the capital, Kiev, and the entry of ground forces to the north, east and south, causing dozens of deaths, according to the Ukrainian authorities. The attack sparked an international outcry, with emergency meetings planned in several countries.
