Scientists have created a treatment for type 2 diabetes without drugs and insulin

The experimental technology uses ultrasound to control glucose

To combat type 2 diabetes, a team of scientists has developed an ultrasound treatment that eliminates the need for hormone injections or the use of medications. The results were published March 31 in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.

Ultrasound has been used to stimulate specific neural metabolic pathways in the patient’s body, to prevent or reverse the onset of diabetes.

In all, the researchers tested the invention in three different preclinical models, measuring the effect of the treatment on blood glucose.

“While we already have a variety of antidiabetic drugs available to treat high glucose levels, we are always looking for new ways to improve insulin sensitivity in diabetes.Explains Raymond Herzog, head of the laboratory at Yale University School of Medicine in the US, who conducted the study with other institutions.

The researchers used a type of technology called peripheral focused ultrasound stimulation (pFUS) to modulate the nerve pathway between the liver and brain, preventing or relieving cases of hyperglycemia in models with different animal species.

The TRPA1 ion channel, as it is called, has proven to be essential in reproducing ultrasound stimuli within”Metabolic control circuitof the test subjects, according to the researchers.

The treatment has shown promising results and should not require the use of additional medications.

The team now hopes to conduct feasibility tests on diabetic patients to bring the medicine closer to the fact that there will be no need for insulin injections or blood glucose tests on patients. Only type 2 diabetes affects about 90% of people with diabetes, according to the SBD.

“If our ongoing clinical trials confirm the promise of preclinical studies mentioned in this article, and ultrasound can be used to lower insulin and glucose levels, then ultrasound neuromodulation will represent an exciting and entirely new addition to the current treatment options for our patients.” Herzog’s account in a statement.
