Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelly, 40, was arrested at his home in Allendale, Michigan, on Thursday.

The case is updated.

The arrest comes in connection with the storming of Congress on January 6 last year, in which Kelly was present, Justice Department spokesman Bill Miller said.

There will be talk of less serious violations as a result of his role in the storm.

The FBI broke into Kelly’s home in Allendale, Michigan, Thursday morning local time, according to FBI spokeswoman Mara Schneider.

He is awaiting trial in Grand Rapids.

Trump supporter

Kelly is one of five Republican candidates vying to become Michigan’s next governor, scheduled for August 2.

Kelly and his staff did not make a statement regarding the arrest.

He has described himself as a “Michigan First” candidate, and has similar wording to Donald Trump’s “America First” slogan. On several occasions, Kelly had previously expressed his strong support for the former president.

Hearing tonight

On January 6 last year, a large group of people stormed the Capitol, mostly Trump supporters. Before the storm, Trump delivered a speech that both Democrats and some Republicans believed incited the crowd to storm the Capitol.

Tonight begins the first of six hearings in which the Jan. 6 panel, made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans, will provide insight into the results after the investigation.

More than 1,000 people have been interviewed over the past eleven months, and photos, videos and audios that have not yet been made public are expected to be presented.
