Who lives there? Guardians of Science guard the world’s largest climate research tower in the heart of the Amazon rainforest | who lives there

In the previous episode, I was introduced to the Cococi area. An ancient town in the hinterland of Ceará where today only two families live. Now the staff at Nice Leaves semi-arid and goes to a place where rain and rivers abound.

The trees are huge, but they look like miniatures next to a structure: The largest climate research tower in the world. It is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, far from urban centers. And in order to succeed, someone has to live there.

The tower is so remote that it can only be reached with the help of teams from INPA – the National Research Institute of the Amazon.

The camp is completely surrounded by forests. It is a simple construction that mixes masonry, wood … and screens to protect against insects.

Murillo Salviano: And you are one of the oldest residents here?
Antonio: From the station yes.
Morelo: How long have you lived here?
Antonio: Oh, she’s about 10, 11 years old. From the beginning until today.
Morelo: Did you help build all this?
Antonio: everybody! I have been involved in all construction work.

The research project is known as ATTO – short for “Torre Alta Observatory in the Amazon”. The station serves as a base for more than 200 scientists who study how the Amazon rainforest interacts with the atmosphere and soil beneath.. It is a partnership between INPA and the German Max Planck Institute.

Technicians are practically camp guardians. Many worked there for more than 10 years. Meet these people and their stories by watching the full episode in the video above.
