Young Portuguese Diogo Ribeiro never tires of making history. This morning, in his third final at the Junior World Championships, he won his third gold, and now has won the 50m butterfly with a new world record in this category. The 17-year-old Portuguese clocked 22.96 seconds in his sprint, having clocked 23.12 seconds in qualifying, a championship record at the time. Diogo Ribeiro is even the first youngster to drop to 22nd place, as the previous class maximum in the world was at 23.05, in the possession of Andrei Minakov. Diogo Ribeiro won the final in complete comfort, leaving the Czech Daniel Graczyk in second place by half a second (23.46), and the Danish Kasper Bogard in third, one second (23.96), after giving up the semi-final 100 meters. Freestyle, he qualified for it with the best qualifying time, ahead of absolute world record holder, Romanian David Popovici.

After winning his third world title, Diogo Ribeiro seemed visibly moved and thanked those who supported him, namely in the Peruvian pool.

“It has been a very difficult, very tense year,” said the Portuguese swimmer, promising to “get used to this rhythm of wins.”

The 17-year-old Benfica swimmer, who is already coached by Alberto Silva, in the Peruvian capital, won the junior world titles in 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The holder of national records for the 100 meters freestyle (48.52 seconds), 100 (51.61) and 50 (22.96) butterflies, the distance at which he won the bronze medal at the last European absolute, in Rome.
