The nomination of candidates for the purchase of TAP Portuguese Airlines has already begun

Published on

Portugal wants to privatize the airline TAP again sometime in the near future and that In itself Nothing new. While you are still studying the best way to make this plan workableCandidates for future partners are already beginning to emerge, among which Lufthansa or Air France-KLM are among the Portuguese government’s favourites.

Another large European group, IAG (owner of British Airways and Iberia) will be out of competition due to competition rules. This is because the market concentration in flights in South America and also in the Iberian Peninsula will be very high, especially after IAG joins Air Europa. Competition authorities would not agree to such an agreement without cutting off major roads.

Talks are still going on on Lufthansa and Air France-KLM since before Covid-19 rocked the aviation world. At the time, investor David Neeleman was reported to be interested in selling his stake in TAP to Lufthansa. But then the epidemic came and business got frustrated. Then the Portuguese state bought its shares from the Brazilian-American investor. Today, the local government owns 92% of the national airline.

In Lisbon, it looks like the sale is slated to start this year. According to ExpressIt should be completed in early 2023.
