The Government of Amazonas, through the State Ministry of Health (SES-AM), has begun offering electrophysiological neurology tests at Policlinica Gilberto Mestrinho, in the south of Manaus. The unit, which is operated by the Amazonas Military Fire Brigade (CBMAM), has begun implementing the procedure used to diagnose and predict injuries to the nervous system. This initiative fulfills Governor Wilson Lima’s determination to expand health services to the population.
This is the first time this type of test has been made available in the state’s public health network. Today, 843 patients are waiting in line for the National Regulatory System (Sisreg) to have the procedure. About 30 patients per month are expected to be treated, for a total of 360 by the end of the year.
The acquired devices are of high performance, and allow recording of electrical activity, as well as assessment of nerve and muscle function to identify possible injuries or diseases. 78,000 Brazilian reals (seventy-eight thousand Brazilian riyals), a resource from the state, have been invested to implement the service in the unit, with the aim of giving its patients access to the best treatments and technologies, and contributing to the promotion of health and well-being of the population.
Electromyography
Electromyography is a test required to analyze the functioning of the patient’s nervous system through electrical impulses. Through it, the nervous field is evaluated to identify diseases affecting the nerves and muscles.
Through this procedure, diseases affecting the anterior horn neuron of the medulla, nerve roots, plexuses, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction, and muscles are evaluated.
In addition, the test should be indicated after medical evaluation, as it is not considered a diagnostic criterion for nerve and muscle diseases. Its result is interpreted according to the patient’s clinical history and neurological clinical examination.
