March, Women’s Month, is also marked by an awareness campaign on women’s health, the Yellow March. The appointment seeks to alert the population to the symptoms and care of endometriosis, a disorder that, according to the IBGE’s National Health Survey, affects more than eight million women in Brazil.

It is common among women in the fertile period, that endometriosis is a change in the functioning of the organism due to endometrial cells (tissue that lines the uterus), which, instead of being expelled during menstruation, follow the opposite direction and remain in the ovaries or in the abdominal cavity where they multiply and bleed again other.

Symptoms of the disorder include: colic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, pain and bleeding when urinating, fatigue, diarrhea, difficulty conceiving, and even infertility. In addition, endometriosis can cause the appearance of a cyst in the ovaries (endometriosis) and cause complications in the organs of the abdominal cavity, pelvis, part of the large intestine, bladder and vaginal appendix, ”warns the gynecologist and coordinator of the Sabine group in São Caetano do Sul, Luciana de Paiva Neri Soares.

Genetic, immunological, and hormonal factors may be involved in the development of the disease, negatively affecting a person’s quality of life.

“It is very important to be aware of the signs that may indicate endometriosis. Given the difficulty of diagnosing the disease and the lack of a cure for it, care is needed so that the patient does not suffer too much from the consequences that may jeopardize her fertility. Periodic follow-up with examinations,” explains Luciana. Routine is essential, so that any change can be quickly noticed and early diagnosed, favoring appropriate treatment and minimizing the impact of the disease on the body.

A clinical examination is the first step towards a diagnosis, which should be followed by ultrasound, blood and MRI examinations and, in some cases, can be confirmed by video laparoscopy.

“MRI is a non-invasive method with high accuracy for the diagnosis and characterization of endometriosis in various departments of the pelvis and in other locations outside the pelvis, which helps in appropriate clinical or surgical treatment,” adds the doctor.

Treatment for the disease includes medications to relieve pain and inflammation, hormonal therapies, and surgery in severe cases.

“It is essential that a woman with endometriosis be monitored and treated until climax, when the condition tends to weaken. Multidisciplinary follow-up with a physician, psychiatrist, physical educator, and nutritionist can provide a significant improvement in the quality of life for these women,” explains the doctor.
