Electric car wireless charging

A team of Swedish researchers has developed a wireless charging system capable of charging an electric vehicle with up to 500 kilowatts of power, which is equivalent to charging in just 10 minutes.

The new technology ensures fast wireless charging of the electric vehicle in 10 minutes

The electric vehicle market is growing at a good pace, but it is still limited by the current charging technology.

In addition to charging, which still requires significant stops, it forces you to constantly walk around with cables to connect the car to the charger.

However, this may be a reality that could change soon. Many manufacturers are already exploring the possibility of inductive charging, that is, wirelessly, in order to simplify this process.

Although there are many solutions already on the market, a team of researchers from Chalmers UniversityIn Sweden, it has developed a new wireless charging system that promises to speed up the charging of electric vehicles.

Wireless charging with peak power of 500 kW

Currently, the most advanced wireless charging systems for electric vehicles allow a maximum power of 360 kW.

However, the Swedish research team managed to significantly exceed this value.

Made of silicon carbide semiconductors, Litz wires made of individually insulated copper wire to compensate for heat generated during charging, and a frequency of 80 kHz, allows for a high level of efficiency.

According to the tests carried out, this system represents a loss of only 1 to 2% of the power generated, against 50% of other systems.

In this way, an electric car can be charged in just 10 minutes, which greatly reduces the biggest barriers for these vehicles.

Wireless charging is seen as one of the next great developments for electric cars, as Tesla has already announced that it is developing a wireless charging system for its cars, and Volvo and Nissan have also started testing this technology.

As for this new induction charging solution, the Swedish research team has revealed that it will not, for the time being, commercialize it as it does not consider it necessary at the moment. On the other hand, they will start applying it in the industrial market where they believe it can also have a great impact.
