Dengue cases have increased in Brazil in recent months, and Mato Grosso do Sul has the second highest incidence of the disease in the entire country. According to data from the Ministry of Health, released by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, MS was the second state with the highest increase in the incidence of dengue throughout Brazil, with 432.5 cases per 100,000 residents.

The first was Espírito Santo, with 921.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Minas Gerais, with 392.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

In an interview with the newspaper, the president of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine, Julio Croda, explained that it is difficult to prove that the upward trend in numbers continues, despite the favorable weather conditions.

According to him, it is important for residents to check and remove sources of stagnant water and garbage, while public authorities have to ensure a better basic sanitation structure across the country.

One worrying factor was the lack of stocks of an insecticide known as “fumacê”, which is used to control the mosquito vector of the disease, Aedes aegypti, endangering the supply of states and municipalities, making it difficult to carry out control measures. the disease.

In addition, favorable climatic conditions, such as rainy and hot summers, may contribute to the increase in dengue cases, which generally peak in April.

measurements – With the increase in cases of dengue, chikungunya and Zika in the country, the Ministry of Health has established the Center for Arboviruses (Arbovirus Emergency Operations Centre), with the aim of developing strategies to control and reduce serious cases and deaths.

The alert comes due to the increase in records of these diseases, such as cases of dengue fever, which grew by 43.8% until March of this year, compared to the same period last year. Notifications of chikungunya are increasing by 97% in the Brazilian territory, where already this year 73 deaths from the disease have been reported.

Another 64 are still under investigation. In the same period last year, the total number of confirmed deaths was 172.

The region that recorded the highest incidence of dengue fever in 2023 is the Midwest, with 254.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the southeast with a rate of 214.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, then the south with a rate of 98.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
