United Nations: There are no indications that the parties in Sudan are ready for negotiations

Despite the ceasefire holding in Sudan, there are no indications that the warring parties are willing to sit down at the negotiating table, according to the United Nations.
The United Nations special envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the ceasefire negotiated by the United States appears to be holding in some parts so far.
– But there are no indications that the warring parties are ready to start serious negotiations, which suggests that both of them believe that it is possible to achieve a military victory over the other, he says, and adds:
– This is a miscalculation.
Several hundred people were killed in the fighting that broke out on 15 April. The capital, Khartoum, and other parts of Sudan witnessed fierce battles between the government army and the Rapid Support Forces.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday that the two sides had agreed to a three-day ceasefire, after several days of intense negotiations. Both warring parties confirmed the cease-fire.
