Odessa mayor arrested

Published on

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Odessa, Hennadig Trukhanov, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into suspected corruption and embezzlement.

Trukhanov was elected mayor of the Black Sea city in 2014, and since 2017 he has been under investigation over allegations of corruption, charges he denies.

He is accused of embezzling 92 million hryvnia, which is equivalent to more than NOK 26.7 million. In 2018 he was acquitted, but when an investigation was launched in 2021 in connection with the purchase of an office building in Odessa, he was again charged.

Odessa is a predominantly Russian city, which the Russians had high hopes of capturing quickly after last year’s invasion, but it has defended itself well.

Trukhanov’s arrest is the latest in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s campaign to crack down on corruption, even in the midst of war. Many high-ranking officials in the government and in the provinces have been arrested or dismissed.
