The Alternative for Germany party nominates a candidate for prime minister in 2025 – document

On Sunday, the AfD could appoint Germany’s first state prime minister, i Thuringia. Now the party is announcing that it will for the first time present a candidate for prime minister for the next national elections in Germany, in the fall of 2025.

The AfD’s rise in opinion polls worries the established German parties. Not just in Thuringia, where the party’s candidate, Robert Sesselmann, is likely to win Sunday’s second round of voting to choose a new prime minister. In the first round of voting on June 11, he unseated the candidate of the Christian Democrats (CDU), Jürgen Cooper, with 46.7 percent to 35.7.

In Sunday’s second round of elections, the CDU’s Cooper drew support from all four of Germany’s other important parties: Die Linke, the SPD, the Greens and the Free Democrats (FDP).

Although the AfD has achieved more than 18 percent in statewide polls, polls also show that it is unlikely that AfD’s Seiselmann will become the first AfD state prime minister , just as Bodo Ramelo became the first state. D-Link Chief Minister in the same state in 2014.

Tenth anniversary

The AfD was founded ten years ago and has gone from around 10 percent support in the 2021 election to nearly 20 in recent German opinion polls. Earlier in June, a poll showed they were larger than Prime Minister Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic party.

The AfD has nearly doubled its support since the German elections in 2021

After the latest still good opinion polls, the party’s co-leader, Alice Fidel, announced that the party would present its own candidate for prime minister in the elections for the new Bundestag in 2025. When asked by RTL/NTV if the decision was made due to high opinion polls, she responded accordingly. ZDF:

“Of course. Wir hätten das auch ohne diese Werte getan, einen Kanzlerkandidaten aufzustellen.”

– Of course, but even without these measurements, we would have nominated our candidate for prime minister.

hung in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung He wrote on Wednesday night that while it was inconceivable that the AfD could elect its own candidate as Germany’s prime minister, the party would only win by fielding its own candidate, if it wasn’t torn apart by a horrific nomination process.

The AfD will certainly not be chancellor in the next future. Mit einem eigen Kanzlerkandidaten kann die Partei aber nur gewinnen – außer sie zerfleischt sich auf der suche selbst. (FAZ)

Alice Fidell herself was ambiguous about whether she herself wanted the party’s nomination for prime minister.
