France: – Teenager shot: big protests

A 17-year-old boy was shot dead by French police in Nanterre on Tuesday, according to several media outlets, including BBC.

A video circulating online shows what is supposed to be a police officer pointing a firearm at the 17-year-old, who is driving. He is said to have never stopped carrying out police orders. Then a shot is heard and the car stops driving.

First aid was attempted at the scene, but no life was saved. Another passenger ran from the scene and one was arrested.

The shooting sparked massive protests in the city. Pictures of burning cars, boxes and fireworks are all over the Internet.

Authorities deployed riot police and firefighters. Several demonstrators were said to have been arrested in connection with the protests.

France’s interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, said on Tuesday that the police officers involved had been questioned about the incidents.

– Darmanin said the video was absolutely shocking, according to the report BBC.

According to local media reports, the authorities will maintain an increased presence in the protest areas in the coming days.
