The Portuguese achieved the best ever national mark in the ten kilometer race
Samuel Barata set Portugal’s all-time best 10km time on Sunday, running in Brasov in 27.45 minutes, breaking a record that had stood for 38 years, since 1985, and was held by Fernando Mamede (28.11).
The 30-year-old Benfica athlete managed to finish seventh in the Romanian race, entering the top three in Europe for the year in the distance, behind German Amanal Petrus (27.32) and Frenchman Jamie Gresier (27.33). Moreover, with this mark, Samuel Barata becomes part of the top 10 Europeans in the distance, in eighth place, with names like Swiss Julian Wanders (27.13) or Mo Farah (27.44) ahead of him.
Note that third place in this race was Eduard Zaccaio, an athlete from Benfica, with 27.14.
Women’s world record
Also in Brasov, Kenyan Agnes Jebet Negic won the 10 km race and set a world record in a race for women only. With 29.24, the 22-year-old athlete also achieved the second-best mark in history in any condition, surpassed only by Yalmzev Yehoalav’s 29.14.
