a Google was ordered to pay more than $1 million to a female executive who accused the company of discrimination based on her gender, and also accused the tech of trying to retaliate once the first accusations were made.

The executive in question, called Ulku Rowe, worked as an engineering director in the cloud division and accused the company of hiring her for a low-level, low-paying position — where men with less experience were hired in the future. What’s more, Rowe says she was passed over for a promotion for a less qualified male colleague.

The case was decided by a New York court, which found that Rowe was the target of discrimination by the Mountain View technology company. Google will now have to pay Rowe $1.15 million.

“This unanimous ruling not only validates Rowe’s claims of mistreatment by Google, but also sends a resounding message that discrimination and retaliation will not be tolerated in the workplace.”Rowe’s lawyer noted, according to Engadget.
