The state Department of Agriculture and Livestock (Seagri) this week began the fifth phase of vaccination against classical swine fever, vaccinating animals of all ages. This phase, supervised by the Alagoas Agency for Defense and Agricultural Inspection (ADELE), continues until December 12.

Alagoas is the first of 11 states in the disease-free zone to join the Ministry of Agriculture’s pilot project, a public-private partnership between the state government, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA), the Brazilian Pig Breeders’ Association, among other partners. . In the final phase, 138,519 animals were vaccinated in more than 5,000 properties, achieving the highest vaccination coverage of the campaign.

The state is also a pioneer in providing resources for vaccination at no cost to breeders, the vast majority of whom are family farmers. At this stage, more than R$400,000 has been contributed to vaccinate animals.

Classical swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs and is not transmissible to humans. The main symptoms in animals are high fever, red lesions on the skin, conjunctivitis, lack of appetite, weakness, diarrhea, and abortion.

Vaccination work is being carried out, and for Alagoas to achieve the status of a zone free of classical swine fever, which would lead to non-compulsory vaccination of animals, it is important that all breeders adhere to it. Vaccination promotes pig farming in Alagoas, ensuring the health of the animals and providing opportunities to increase production performance, in addition to ensuring the opening of markets for the sale of pork and production chain products.
