Portugal operated for six consecutive days using renewable energy. There were 149 consecutive hours in which green electricity exceeded the needs of households and businesses across the country.

From 4 a.m. on October 31 to 9 a.m. today, November 6, 1,102 GWh were produced, a figure that far exceeds national consumption for the same period (840 GWh). The previous record dates back to 2019 and was 131 hours, REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais said today in a statement.

Ren adds that during these six-plus days, two other records were broken. “The first, between 10 pm on October 31 and 9 am on November 6, was that the production of renewable energy was greater than necessary to supply the entire national electrical system (including the pumping needs of hydroelectric reservoirs), without requiring any use. From traditional thermal generation sources, specifically natural gas combined cycle plants. There were 131 consecutive hours, almost three times the previous record, set in 2021, in which the record was held for 56 hours.

Then “the second maximum occurred between 10:00 a.m. on November 1 and 9:00 a.m. on November 5, and corresponds to 95 consecutive hours in which renewable production was greater than consumption, without the need to resort to power plants.” Using natural gas, Portugal exports to Spain, surpassing the previous record of 52 hours set in 2018.

“These important records confirm that Portugal has maintained a sustainable path in the gradual integration of domestic renewable energy sources, maintaining the fundamental objectives of security of supply and quality of service,” the Rodrigo Costa-led company concluded.
