The Portuguese electricity company thus joins Iberdrola, Repsol and Statkraft in an agreement highlighted by the Spanish press as a “before and after” sign in the so-called PPA contracts.

Hypermarket chain Mercadona, known as the largest private consumer of electricity in Spain, has made the history of energy supply contracts in Spain by awarding the services of four suppliers, including EDP, for the supply of clean energy.

The Portuguese electricity company thus joins Iberdrola, Repsol and Statkraft in an agreement highlighted by the Spanish press as a “before and after” sign in the so-called Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which are long-term, multi-million dollar agreements aimed at buying and selling long-term clean energy of a specific origin. At a pre-determined price between the renewable energy supplier and the consumer.

In April this year, Mercadona revealed that it was investing in self-consumption of electricity, in order to contain operating costs and provide customers with the possibility of keeping prices at low levels. To this end, the company, according to the Spanish press, wants to multiply its installed capacity tenfold and increase from the current 28 megawatts – which already represents more than 38 thousand solar panels.

In this way, the distribution chain in Valencia aspires to have more than two thousand stores equipped with solar installations by the end of this decade, in addition to all the warehouses, as Adolfo Ortiz, Energy Director of Mercadona, explained at the Energy Consumers Association Forum, in April of this General.
