The increase in tariffs next year is due to the inflation rate set by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The cost of inspecting cars will rise by 1.70 euros in 2024, to 35.89 euros, while the cost of inspecting motorcycles will rise by 86 cents, to 18.08 euros, according to a decision published today in the newspaper Diário da República.
According to the deliberations of the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT), the basic value, excluding VAT, of the mandatory periodic inspection (IPO) for light vehicles rises to 29.18 euros, compared to the current 27.80 euros.
In contrast, the price of inspecting motorcycles, tricycles and quad bikes will rise from €14.00 to €14.70.
Among heavy vehicles, the increase in the basic value was €2.08, rising from €41.69 to €43.68. With VAT, the increase amounts to 2.56 euros, for a total of 53.73 euros for customers.
If re-examined, the value with VAT rises by 42 cents, to €8.99, as a result of the basic update from €6.97 to €7.31.

“Taking into account that according to the latest update of the National Institute of Statistics dated December 14, 2023, referring to November 2023, of the ‘Consumer Price Index’, the annual measured variation rate (without housing) was set at 4.98%, it is necessary to calculate the impact of ‘this Indicator of current definitions,” stated the proceedings of the Institute of Mobility and Transport published today in Diário da República.
The IMT document states that these updates will take effect on January 1, 2024.
