Astronomical phenomena such as a supermoon, meteor showers, comet trails, and eclipses are already scheduled to occur in 2024. The Valongo Observatory, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, has chronologically cataloged the year's major events and at what moment they could be observed. Among the supermoons, for example, there will be two, both in the second half of the year. Regarding the eclipse, there will also be two eclipses, one lunar and one solar, both partial. Meteor showers and comets are included in the list of events predicted by the observatory, which separated them and are the best and most important ones that are worth anticipating.

Supermoon

In 2024, two supermoons are scheduled to appear, one on September 7 and the other on October 17. This phenomenon occurs as a result of the combination of two events: the Moon being in its full phase, and also at perigee, that is, the moment when the natural satellite is closest to the Earth. In the first supermoon of 2024, the phenomenon can be seen in the constellation Aquarius, while the second is in the constellation Aries.

Eclipse

This year, some areas of Brazil may witness two eclipses, one lunar (when the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon) and the other solar (when the Moon casts its shadow on a narrow area of ​​the Earth's surface). Both will be seen in a partial way.

The first eclipse is scheduled to occur on March 25, and it will be lunar. According to astronomers, it can be seen throughout the American continent. In Brazil, this phenomenon will occur in the early hours of the morning, before dawn.

The solar eclipse, on October 2, will also be partial, and can be seen in the states of Porto Alegre, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and partially in the states of Bahia. From Minas, Goiás and Mato Grosso.

In the transitional period from September 17 to September 18, a partial lunar eclipse will also occur, with the possibility of viewing it across the entire American continent. But according to astronomers at the Valongo Observatory, the event will be very faint, as the Moon will be covered by only 0.08%. In Rio de Janeiro, the phenomenon will begin at 11:12 pm, peak at 11:44 pm, and end at 12:16 am.

On April 8, a complete solar eclipse is expected in Mexico, the United States, Canada, the tropical region of the Pacific Ocean, and the North Atlantic Ocean. This phenomenon will not be visible in Brazil.

Meteor showers

Meteor showers occur at different times of the year, and can be seen when the Earth becomes a path for streams originating from comets and asteroids. According to expectations, the peak of one of the phenomena occurred yesterday.

The Quadrantid meteor shower has been recorded since December 28, and will continue until January 12. However, only the northern and northeastern regions will be able to observe this phenomenon.
