Workers in Autoeuropa industrial park 'concerned' about layoffs and meet on Tuesday – Executive Summary

Published on

Workers' committees in the AutoEuropa industrial area are concerned about the consequences of stopping production and resorting to layoffs at the Palmilla car plant for the 20 supplier companies, meeting in this context on Tuesday.

“Resorting to demobilization [na Autoeuropa] “It makes us even more concerned about the uncertainty of how supplier companies will react to this form of production cessation,” said a statement issued by the coordinator of the workers’ committees at the AutoEuropa industrial park, in Palmilla, in the Setubal region.

The management of the Volkswagen/AutoEuropean car plant announced on 9 May its intention to carry out two temporary production stops, with layoffs in place, over eight days in June and 13 days in July, due to the decarbonising restructuring of the plant.

The coordinator noted in the statement that previous production shutdowns, in which Autoeuropa's management resorted to layoffs, mainly affected temporary workers and workers on fixed-term contracts, who saw their contractual relationship end and were placed on unemployment.

The coordinator also states that during previous production shutdowns in Autoeuropa, workers in companies located in the industrial park suffered a reduction in income of 5%, 10% or even 33%, which meant, in the latter case, a one-third reduction in salary. Non-working days.
