The National Association of Dialysis Centers (ANADIAL), in collaboration with the Portuguese Society of Nephrology (SPN), is promoting the third edition of the “ANADIAL-SPN” Research Award in Nephrology, for which applications can be submitted by August 31, 2024.

This award, awarded annually, aims to encourage clinical studies and epidemiological evaluations in the field of chronic renal failure, with particular importance in the context of prevention and improvement of care for chronic kidney disease.

“Through this initiative, we intend to contribute to increasing scientific knowledge about chronic kidney disease in Portugal, its causes and the population involved, taking into account the high incidence and prevalence of patients suffering from this disease, especially in its more advanced stages, and the absence of relevant clinical investigations and epidemiological studies.” In this field,” offers Sofía Correa de Barros, President of ANADIAL.

Works nominated for the ANADIAL-SPN Award may be: a) interim analyses of ongoing epidemiological studies (provided that these analyses are anticipated in the study design and the results are relevant); b) works already completed, or research projects in the inception phase.

The winning project, which will be evaluated by a jury of 6 members, will receive a prize of 10,000 euros.

Chronic kidney disease is a disease caused by slow and irreversible deterioration of kidney function. As a result of loss of function, there is retention in the blood of substances normally excreted by the kidneys, leading to the accumulation of toxic metabolic products in the blood (azotemia or urea). There are many diseases that can damage the kidneys and lead to chronic kidney failure, including high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic glomerulonephritis, and some genetic diseases. In more advanced stages, people with this disease need to undergo regular kidney replacement therapy, which can be dialysis, peritoneal dialysis or a kidney transplant.
