A man has been caught trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by stuffing them down his pants, according to the country's customs authorities.
Customs officers in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen stopped the man as he passed through Futian Port, a checkpoint between Hong Kong and mainland China, the customs said in a statement on Tuesday.

During the search, officers found six drawstring bags, sealed with duct tape, in his pants pockets.
The statement added, “The officers opened the bags and discovered that each bag contained a number of live snakes of different shapes and colors.”

After careful counting, a total of 104 snakes were found.
Five species of snakes were later recognized – the milk snake, the western hognose snake, the corn snake, the Texas mouse snake, and the bull snake.
Four of them are not native to China, and none of them are considered poisonous.
The incident must have happened a few days ago, but the statement did not specify when, CNN wrote.
Customs authorities did not say whether the man had been arrested, but warned that violating the rules would have legal consequences according to the law.

However, this is not the first time someone has been caught trying to smuggle reptiles into mainland China.
In June, another man was arrested for trying to smuggle 454 endangered tortoises from Macau to mainland China.
