Losing a loved one can speed up aging, study says

More specifically, an investigation conducted at Columbia University in the United States concluded that: People who lost a parent, partner, sibling, or child showed signs of biological aging compared to people who did not experience this type of loss..

In case you didn’t know, biological aging refers to the gradual decline in the performance of cells, tissues, and organs, leading to an increased risk of chronic disease. Scientists generally measure this type of aging using DNA markers.

For the study, researchers analyzed more than 20,000 individuals from adolescence to adulthood. About 40 percent of participants experienced at least one loss in adulthood, between the ages of 33 and 43.

Thus, they concluded that people who had experienced two or more losses were of older biological ages.According to the researchers, experiencing two or more losses in adulthood had a stronger association with biological aging than a single loss, and, moreover, a much greater effect than no loss.
