Google Gemini May Adopt Android Theme Colors in Potential Design Overhaul

Published on

Google appears to be testing a notable visual redesign for its Gemini app, signaling a possible shift away from the chatbot’s established branding. Early findings suggest the company may soon allow Gemini’s interface to dynamically match Android device themes and wallpaper colors, bringing it more in line with the broader Material You design language used across the Android ecosystem.

APK Teardown Reveals New Gemini Theme Integration

According to an APK teardown conducted by Android Authority of the Google Gemini app version 17.12.51, a future release of the app may adopt color accents based on a user’s Android theme or wallpaper.

The feature is not currently available in the public version of the app. However, the publication was able to manually enable the hidden design changes by modifying the app’s APK, a common method used to uncover unreleased features still in development.

Google Moves Gemini Closer to Android’s Material You Aesthetic

Android has long offered users the ability to personalize interface colors across supported apps and system menus through its Material You theming system. While many third-party applications and some Google services have embraced the feature, several major Google apps—including the Google app, Google Maps, and the Play Store—have maintained more fixed visual identities.

Gemini has similarly retained its distinctive four-color glow and branding since launch, suggesting Google initially intended the AI assistant to stand apart visually from other Android apps. The newly discovered redesign indicates that strategy may be changing.

Redesign Currently Limited to Gemini Overlay

At present, the new theme-aware color scheme reportedly appears only within the Gemini overlay interface rather than throughout the full app.

This suggests the redesign remains in an early testing phase and may still undergo further refinement before any public rollout. Google has not officially confirmed whether the feature will launch broadly or remain an internal experiment.

Some Users May Object to the Visual Changes

The redesign could prove divisive among users, particularly those who value Gemini’s current visual identity.

Screenshots shared in the report show substantial changes to the overlay’s appearance, with some interface elements becoming less visually distinct under the new color treatment. One notable adjustment is the microphone icon appearing less prominent, while the Gemini Live shortcut receives greater emphasis.

Critics of the redesign may argue that the updated interface reduces clarity and weakens the recognizability of Gemini’s branding.

Inconsistent Design Raises Questions

Another point of concern is that the wallpaper-based color changes currently do not extend to the full Gemini app. This inconsistency may indicate that Google is still experimenting with the concept rather than preparing an imminent launch.

If the company proceeds with the redesign, it may further refine the interface to ensure visual consistency and usability across all Gemini surfaces.

Conclusion

Google’s apparent testing of a theme-adaptive Gemini interface suggests the company may be reconsidering how its AI assistant fits into Android’s broader design philosophy. While the update could improve visual integration with users’ devices, it may also dilute one of Gemini’s most recognizable design elements. For now, the feature remains unreleased, but its discovery points to continued experimentation with Gemini’s evolving interface.
