A BOLA – João Paulo Correia on violence in stadiums and the Évora-Picardo conflict (Sport)

Statements by Joao Paulo Correa, Minister of State for Youth and Sports, who will attend tonight the “O Gaiense” newspaper gala:

About the balance sheet:

“A frankly positive balance. The areas we prioritize have clear outcomes.”

In combating violence:

“Sports organisations, their leaders and promoters, together with the government, are committed to combating violence in sport. We have a series of measures focused on prevention, but also strong anti-violence measures, which have already been approved in Parliament.”

“No legislation by itself can fight and end 100% of violence in sport. We really need the commitment of all the agents involved because, even as supporters, it’s a job we’ve all been called to. It is a daily task that is supported by new legislation.”

“We want our sports stadiums to be increasingly safe, where families can be. We can’t be afraid to go to the pitches and wards.”

About the feud between Nelson Evora and Pedro Pichardo, triple jumpers:

“It was a small struggle between two great champions of Portuguese sport. We all celebrated the achievements of Pedro Pichardo and Nelson Evora. They are in the National Gymnasium and deserve our admiration.”

“As in all crises, common sense must prevail, hoping that this episode will not be repeated. The issue of nationalizing the athletes was something that never aroused controversy or suspicion, it is not an issue.”
