A newborn baby girl was admitted to hospital after she was found wrapped in a towel in a shopping bag on a street in sub-zero London.
The newborn was found by a pedestrian in Newham, east London, on Thursday evening, according to police. The pedestrian was walking the dog when he heard a crying sound from the shopping bag.
The person warmed the girl until the ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital. “I am pleased to say she has not been injured in any way and is safe with medical staff,” Newham Chief Constable Simon Crick says.
The girl was probably barely an hour old when she was found. Crick says the hiker may have saved the girl's life. She was given the temporary name Elsa.
Police say they are extremely concerned about the health of the child's mother, who has not been found.
Police Chief Crick encourages the mother to call police and says the health care system is ready to receive her.
– She was in shock and needed immediate health care after giving birth, he said.
