A Walgreens employee fatally shot a pregnant woman in Nashville – resulting in an emergency caesarean section. The employee claims the woman attempted to shoplift.

Earlier this week, a 34-year-old pregnant woman was shot and killed at a Walgreens in Nashville, Tennessee.

A confrontation then allegedly led to the shop worker, who was armed, shooting the woman.

Spray with pepper spray

Police said the incident occurred in a parking lot outside the shop, according to local media WKRN. The clerk followed the two individuals and watched them unload stolen items into the baggage compartment.

As he approached, someone allegedly removed a canister of pepper spray and sprayed the employee.

– The employee said he then pulled out his semi-automatic pistol and began firing, the police wrote in a statement.

The man is said to have made it clear to the police that he was afraid and acted as an emergency, and that he did not know whether the woman was armed or not.

Critical but stable

The two women were then said to have jumped into the car and drove to the emergency room, where the pregnant woman was released.

The robber ended up being taken by ambulance to the hospital, where several operations and an emergency caesarean section were expected.

The condition of both mother and child is critical but stable. The unborn child is said to have miraculously avoided being hit by bullets.

The Walgreens employee has not been arrested, but the case is still under investigation. The 21-year-old called emergency services himself after the incident.

The incident received a lot of attention, and many cited Walgreens’ protocol whereby workers must not pursue suspected burglars, according to TMZ.
