The story of baby Matilda moved (and united) the country around the issue of the girl who was born with a rare disease: type 1 spinal muscular atrophy, the most serious.

It was in June 2019 when TVI brought up the issue on “Você na TV”, where the girl’s parents, Carla and Miguel, presented the drama they were facing to the Portuguese.

The country responded with a giant wave of solidarity, and within a few days, the parents of little Mathilde raised two and a half million euros to purchase the innovative drug to save the child’s life. Meanwhile, in an unprecedented “turnaround”, in August, baby Matilda was able to get the drug, which had been paid for by the Portuguese state, through the national health system.

After all the controversy surrounding the donations, the case of baby girl Mathilde didn’t get much media attention until then. On Wednesday, October 12, little Mathilde visited Manuel Luis Jocha in the company of her mother, Carla Martins, who was moved by remembering the difficult times she spent most of her time with the child and not with the other children as much as she could. The moment was shared on social media, where many of the presenter’s followers were taken to see little Mathilde again: “Matilde, you are so beautiful. I hope the future gives you this joy of life. I am touched because I haven’t seen you in a long time and suddenly I see your little face on TV without waiting,” can be read.
