All health units in Barra de Minas, except for UBS Nossa Senhora das Graças, are now open for the final phase of the rabies vaccination campaign.
In the morning, the service continues until noon. Units will then reopen at 1pm and are scheduled to close at 4pm. The mobilization will also have the support of Vacimóvel, parked in Parque do Bariri, providing another strategic point for vaccinating pets.
Throughout the week, the Center for Zoonotic Disease Control also provided assistance to administer the vaccine, which is mandatory for all dogs and cats from four months of age.
Only younger or sick animals cannot receive the dose. Veterinarian Oscar Leitao, head of the Center for Zoonotic Disease Control, made a partial assessment of the results of the campaign:
Barra de Minas has not recorded cases of rabies in dogs and cats for a few years now, however, Oscar reinforces the call for animal owners to take their animals for vaccination.
Rabies is a serious contagious viral disease of mammals, including humans, with a fatality rate of approximately 100%. Transmission of the infection occurs through the saliva of infected animals, or through biting, scratching, or licking.
