American journalist and news anchor Barbara Walters dies

During more than three decades on ABC, and before that on NBC, Walters became known on shows like “Today” on NBC and “20/20” on ABC, among others.

Her spokeswoman confirmed, “Barbara Walters passed away peacefully at home among those who loved her. She lived her life without regret.”

The CEO of The Walt Disney Company said, “Barbara was a true legend, a pioneer not only for women in journalism, but for journalism itself. She was a reporter unique in her field and gave many of the most important interviews of our time.” ABC’s parent company, Bob Iger, said in a statement.

Barbara Walters began her career in 1961 as a reporter, writer, and host on NBC’s “Today Show” before being promoted to co-host in 1974. In 1976, she became the first female anchor on a news program. at peak time.

For more than 40 years, he has been an authority on American television and journalism. Chat with world leaders but also with celebrities on daytime shows.

The journalist has interviewed, among others, all US presidents, from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama, as well as former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who died in October 2021, and Cuba’s Fidel Castro, who died in 2016.

In 2014, Walters left “The View” but will continue to work part-time at NBC for another two years.
