This week starts with bad news for Portuguese drivers. Fuel prices will rise from Monday: “The development of prices in euros indicates a price rise of 2 cents per liter for diesel and up to 2.5 cents per liter for gasoline,” said a source from one of the main national oil companies. To the executive summary.
Prices at gas stations next to supermarkets follow the same line. “Next week’s trend will be a €0.0172 increase in gasoline and a €0.0150 increase in diesel,” another source said.
Since the beginning of the year, the price of diesel has decreased by 2 cents per liter, while the price of gasoline has increased by 3 cents. This means that filling a 60-litre petrol tank costs €1.8 more than it did in January. Filling a diesel tank requires 1.2 euros less than in the first week of the year.
Data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) shows that the average price of a liter of petrol in Portugal currently costs €1,669 while diesel costs €1,549. However, prices may vary across gas stations, as the price quoted on the network also takes into account the level of competition, supply and demand in each market and the level of fixed costs at each station.
In the latest bulletin issued by the European Commission, Portugal ranks ninth among the countries with the most expensive gasoline in the European Union, i.e. 4.4 cents higher than the European average and 18 cents more expensive than Spain. Diesel ranks eighth.
The price difference between Portugal and Spain results from the tax burden, because without taxes the price of gasoline is cheaper in Portugal. Without the tax burden, each liter of 95 gasoline in Portugal would cost 71.4 cents, less than 75.2 cents in Spain.
Among the EU countries, Denmark has the most expensive 95 gasoline on the Old Continent: 1,888 euros. Belgium “prevails” in diesel: 1,666 euros.
