Astronomers discover the farthest star in the Milky Way

Astronomy scientists They revealed that they had identified what stars The most distant ever in Milky Way. The announcement includes the most distant star ever discovered from Earth, at more than a million light-years away, according to information from the University of California Santa Cruz in the United States.

The discovery includes 208 stars, called RR Lyrae that are notable for their luminosity, according to the foundation. Because they are located at the galactic boundary, in the so-called “halo” (about halfway to the neighboring Andromeda galaxy, 2.5 million light-years away), they allow measurements of the Milky Way to be measured more easily.

In the statement released by the university, Professor and Director of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the institution, Raja Guathakurta, noted that the study “redefines what constitutes the outer limits of our galaxy” and that the Milky Way and Andromeda are “so large that there is no distance between the two.”

The scientist also noted that the halo is the place where the oldest stars in the galaxy are located and extends for hundreds of thousands of light years in all directions.

“The way the brightness varies is like an EKG. They’re like the heartbeat of a galaxy. Brightness increases rapidly and decreases slowly, and the cycle repeats itself smoothly with this very distinct shape.”

The discoveries came from data collected by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), located on the island of Hawaii.
