The Russians announced in Zenit, Wednesday, that defender Yaroslav Rakitsky, 32, asked to terminate the contract that expired next July, citing a “difficult family situation”, in the wake of the conflict sparked by Russia in Ukraine.
“The club and fans thank Yaroslav Rakitsky, for appreciating the professionalism and passion he showed as a player for the club. We sincerely wish all the best to Yaroslav, his friends and family.”
The central defender arrived at Zenit in January 2019, and since then he has played 108 matches, having won three championships for the Saint Petersburg club, of which Vladimir Putin has been a strong supporter.
Rakitsky was criticized by many Ukrainians when he moved to Zenit, and was not called up for the Ukraine national team, for which he played 55 international matches.
