This is the focus of a study conducted by the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Slovakia and the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom. By analyzing more than 100 videos of cat fights, the scientists were able to identify some characteristics to distinguish between feline interactions.

There are various characteristics that can help explain whether the jokes are, in fact, a fight.

After looking at issues related to distance, vocalization, and other behaviors, the researchers came to the conclusion that there are three types of interactions between cats.

One is called “Fun,” which includes cuddling like licking, labeling, and freestyle slapping.

The other is called contraries, where one cat overwhelms the other with threats, aggression, and submission. The main indication for this type of behavior is vocalization and “lethargy,” that is, the cat standing still or hiding so as not to be attacked.

The other, more complex one, is the median – which causes us more doubts. 28% of the interactions the researchers observed were of this type.

Basically, these interactions usually seem to start off as playful, but quickly become sociable, after which they can go back to play and nonviolence.

The group determined that the main signs of violence and stress are vocalization and inactivity. Therefore, the scientists say that more studies need to be done in the area to be able to provide more accurate data on feline conflicts.
