Chikungunya cases grow and dengue fever decreases in Brazil in 2021

Between January and early December this year, the total number of chikungunya cases in Brazil was 93,403. The figure represents an increase of 31.3% compared to the same period last year.

The regions with the highest incidence of the disease were the Northeast (111.7 per 100 000 population), the Southeast (29.1) and the Midwest (6.9). In the analyzed period, 13 deaths as a result of the disease were confirmed, with 24 cases under investigation.

Data are available in the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin on previously transmitted arbovirus cases in urban areas Aedes aegypti, released this Thursday (16), available at folder location .

The total cases of dengue fever reached 508.2 thousand during the period, a decrease of 45.7% compared to the same period in 2020. The regions with the highest infection rates are the Midwest (548.8 per 100 thousand people), the South (218.6) and the Southeast (210.9).

Between January and December 2020, 230 deaths from dengue were recorded, 189 with laboratory criteria and 41 with clinical and epidemiological criteria. Another 47 deaths are under investigation.

Zika virus cases also decreased between 2021 and 2020. Between January and December of this year, 6,020 probable cases were reported. The figure corresponds to a decrease of 15.4% from the same period last year.

“In light of this scenario, the need to implement measures to reduce cases and detailed investigation of deaths, to support the monitoring and assistance of severe cases and to prevent new deaths, recommends the authors of the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin.
