In 1892 the operation of the game was assigned to a private company, and it was not until 1893 that the lottery was definitively operated, under a monopoly system, by the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisbon.

On November 24, 1955, through Decree-Law 40397, the lottery officially and fully assumed the name National Lottery, a designation it retains to this day and includes the classic and popular lotteries.

On March 10, 1987, the popular lottery with affordable prices for players was launched. And this launch was related to the need to combat illegal gambling, namely the “raffles” that spread in various media, and to direct this demand towards the legal presentation of social games to the state, and to win the audience less purchasing power.

Classic and popular lotteries fall under the category of lotteries in which each drawing corresponds to the issuance of numbered tickets, to participate in a drawing of numbers called extraction. With first prize values ​​ranging from 75 to 150 thousand euros, the prices for the popular lottery part also vary according to the type of draws: Normal: 2 euros | Specials: €3 | Extraordinary: 5 euros. It is the product of the Jogos Santa Casa purse with the second highest probability of matching the number awarded for the first prize.
