A woman in France has lost part of her face due to cancer rare Organ transplantation nose that was 3D printing. The nose was made almost exclusively in the laboratory. However, because the blood vessels are too complex to be woven into the three-dimensional structure, to supply the nose with the necessary blood, surgeons strap it to the patient’s forearm before implanting it on her face.
After two months of development in the arm, the nose was moved onto the woman’s face during a six-hour microsurgery procedure, which carefully connected the new blood vessels to the patient’s temple.
I had the transplant in November 2022, but it has only been revealed now. The patient spent ten days in the hospital and three weeks on antibiotics. After this period, surgeons at the Cancer Institute at the University of Toulouse declared the patient “fine”.
according to Science alert, one of the lead surgeons in this case, Agnès Dupret-Bories, was inspired to try a 3D-printed nose implant after talking to a PhD student in Belgium. The student, a biomaterials scientist, had previously tested artificial cheek implants.
“Today, the transplant is a success,” reads a Facebook post from the Hospital Center Universitaire de Toulouse. After nine years and many unsuccessful nose reconstructions, the patient finally got her nose back.
