Donald Trump: Raising the level of charges

New York Attorney General Letitia James filed financial fraud charges against the Trump Organization.

It became known on Friday.

The Attorney General’s Office said less than two weeks ago that Donald Trump and his team overstated their worth, that is, lied about their company’s wealth, by as much as $812 million to $2.2 billion annually over ten years.

Now they believe it is much more than that, worth between $1.9 and $3.6 billion, Reuters writes.

– A mountain of evidence

The new figures appear in documents filed by the attorney general in court in New York on Friday. Here, State Attorney Letitia James wrote that the numbers are based on new findings by her team, and that they have “irrefutable” evidence.

The charges generally relate to the years 2011 to 2021. The years 2014 to 2019 are now being amended upward, Reuters reported. The last three of them were President Trump.

The prosecutor also writes that there is a “mountain of evidence” against Trump and that this lie about his wealth secured much better loan and insurance terms for the company.

Among other things, the documents will dispute the way Trump evaluated his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, and the penthouse at the top of Trump Tower in Manhattan.

A hearing in the civil lawsuit filed against Donald Trump, the Trump Company, and his children, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump, is scheduled for September 22. This hearing will determine whether there will be a trial.

The prosecutor is demanding a $250 million fine for fraud, as well as a ban on Trump and his children from continuing to lead the New York-based company.

The case has been under investigation since 2022.

According to Reuters, it only took six minutes after the Attorney General’s letter arrived before Trump’s lawyers responded to these accusations.

They responded by saying that Trump was undoubtedly worth billions of dollars, and that he also received large sums of money from the companies that financed and secured his “enormous corporate empire.”

-There was no fraud. The lawyers also said that there were no victims.

The lawyers want the entire case to be dropped.

They also claim that statutes of limitations prevent the attorney general from pursuing many of the allegations and also accused her of “ridiculing, belittling and defaming President Trump and his entire family through an opportunistic lawsuit for political gain.”

Trump also tried to postpone the trial for three weeks, but the judge rejected that earlier this week.

American expert Hilmar Melde previously told Dagbladet that Trump has a point when he accuses New York State of having political motives.

James is himself a Democrat.

– The popularly elected prosecutor ran an election campaign against Trump. There is a lot of political prestige in this case, no matter how well-founded the case is — there are many who want to see Trump behind bars.

At the same time, he was not surprised that there seemed to be tangible evidence of filth, since Trump “has always operated in the (illegal) border zone.”

This case is separate from the other indictments against Trump. In all cases he pleaded not guilty.
