Extreme Heat Warning Issued as San Diego County Expands Safety Measures and Prepares for Possible Power Shutoffs

Published on

San Diego County officials are urging residents to prepare for a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat, elevated wildfire conditions and possible power outages as extreme temperatures and Santa Ana winds move into Southern California.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of San Diego County beginning Friday morning. Forecast conditions have also raised the possibility that some San Diego Gas & Electric customers could experience Public Safety Power Shutoffs through Oct. 5.

San Diego County Faces Dangerous Heat and Wildfire Risk

Forecasters expect dangerously high temperatures through next Thursday. Highs are projected to reach the 90s near the coast and climb into the 100s across inland valleys.

Warm overnight temperatures could make it more difficult for residents to recover from daytime heat, while the combination of hot, dry and windy weather is expected to increase wildfire danger throughout the region.

Hot and dry conditions combined with strong winds can overlap with Red Flag periods, creating an environment where wildfires can ignite and spread quickly.

SDG&E is monitoring weather and fire conditions and could activate Public Safety Power Shutoffs, commonly known as PSPS events, if wildfire risks become severe. The precautionary shutoffs are designed to reduce the possibility that electrical equipment could contribute to a wildfire during dangerous weather.

Residents Urged to Prepare for Wildfire Conditions

County officials are encouraging residents to monitor fire-weather advisories and avoid activities that could accidentally start a fire.

Residents should secure trailer chains to prevent sparks, properly dispose of cigarettes and keep emergency go-kits ready in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

Officials said these precautions can help reduce potential ignition sources while improving household readiness during periods of elevated fire danger.

How to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Extreme heat can pose serious health risks to people and animals. Older adults, children, pregnant individuals, outdoor workers and people with chronic medical conditions can be particularly vulnerable.

Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, confusion, heavy sweating and fainting. Anyone experiencing serious symptoms should seek immediate medical assistance.

Residents are advised to spend the hottest parts of the day in air-conditioned buildings, drink plenty of water and avoid excessive sugary or alcoholic beverages. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can also help the body stay cooler.

Officials caution against relying solely on electric fans when temperatures exceed 90 degrees. Children, older adults and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, even for a short period.

Cool Zones Available Across San Diego County

The County’s Cool Zones program provides air-conditioned locations where residents can escape dangerous temperatures.

The network includes 33 branch libraries and community centers across San Diego County. These facilities can be particularly important for residents who do not have reliable air conditioning at home.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through AlertSanDiego to receive important safety notifications and preparedness information.

Heat Could Affect Conditions Near Tijuana River Valley

County officials are also monitoring environmental conditions near the Tijuana River Valley, where hydrogen sulfide odors can become more noticeable during periods of high temperatures.

Residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed and operate air-conditioning systems using the recirculation setting to reduce outdoor air entering their homes.

County environmental and public health officials will continue monitoring conditions in the area throughout the heat event.

Pet Owners Encouraged to Limit Outdoor Activity

Animals also face significant risks during extreme heat.

County officials recommend keeping pets indoors whenever possible and ensuring they have continuous access to clean drinking water. Outdoor exercise should be limited to cooler periods, particularly early morning and evening.

Pets should never be left unattended in parked vehicles, where interior temperatures can rise rapidly even when outside conditions appear manageable.

County Prepares for Possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs

With potential SDG&E power shutoffs approaching, officials are asking households to prepare before electricity is interrupted.

Residents should charge cellphones, flashlights, portable batteries and essential medical equipment in advance. Homes can also be cooled earlier in the day before temperatures peak.

People should consider visiting a Cool Zone if temperatures inside their homes become unsafe. Families are encouraged to establish communication plans with relatives and neighbors, maintain adequate drinking water and continue monitoring official emergency alerts.

County emergency teams are tracking weather, wildfire and power conditions while coordinating with public-safety agencies. County departments are also contacting vulnerable residents they serve in communities that could face the greatest impacts.

As extreme heat and Santa Ana winds persist, officials are emphasizing preparation, hydration and close attention to emergency notifications as key steps for staying safe during the prolonged weather event.
