Total suspected cases in Amazonas rose to 61

The Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), this Tuesday (10/19), Bulletin No. 04 of the epidemiological scenario of rhabdomyolysis in the state. In all, there are 61 suspected cases of the disease in 10 municipalities. The document can be accessed on the FVS-RCP website at the link https://bit.ly/2Z6v7SU.

In the bulletin, there are 111 reported cases, as of Tuesday. Of these, 61 were considered suspicious while the other 50 were eliminated by the Strategic Information Center on Health Surveillance FVS-RCP (CIEVS/FVS-RCP) team.

Among the 10 municipalities that registered suspected cases of the disease, Itaquitara ranked first with more notifications (53) – among suspects (29) and neglected (24). Other communes suspected of having rhabdomyolysis are: Parintins (13), Manaus (6), Urucurituba (4), Silves (3), Maués (2), Autazes (1), Caapiranga (1), Itapiranga (1) and Manakaburu (1).

The document also updates the number of deaths in patients suspected of having rhabdomyolysis. As of Tuesday, there are two deaths: two women residing in Itacoatara (176 kilometers from Manaus), aged 51 and 68, occurred on August 27 and October 7, respectively. The deaths are part of the 61 suspected cases of the syndrome.

FVS-RCP Director Tatiana Amorim notes that the foundation continues to investigate cases of the disease. Of the 61 suspected cases, 32 were recorded in August, 22 in September and 7 in October. He indicated that we have noticed a slight increase in cases compared to the previous bulletin, but we are continuing to investigate the cases.”

Investigation – Investigations into suspected cases are carried out by CIEVS/FVS-RCP, in partnership with municipal epidemiological surveillance teams, which collaborate in the identification and disposal of rhabdomyolysis cases. Since it is a disease with various causes, investigation of rhabdomyolysis follows precise criteria.

Serum and urine samples were collected from six hospitalized patients in Itacoatiara and a fish sample consumed by one of these patients. The samples were sent to the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Santa Catarina (IFSC). Amazonas is awaiting the release of the results of the analyzes.
