God of War: Ragnarök will be released for PlayStation 5 and PS4 to be accessible to all fans of the series and especially the 2018 game, but Digital Foundry has described several benefits for those who will play it on Sony’s latest console.
The topic of cross-state impact on the quality of video games has long been debated, and according to the Digital Foundry, God of War: Ragnarök is a game with incredibly polished presentation and the animation of its character will surprise players.
With a design and structure similar to what you have in the 2018 game, the sequel has received significant improvements in lighting, one of the elements that have the biggest impact on improving visual quality, and screen space orientation occlusion has also been introduced to improve scenarios and blend characters with their surroundings.
God of War: Ragnarök reveals several visual improvements over previous improvements, but is described as a natural progression. The common scenarios in both games show obvious improvements thanks to lighting and shadows, but also remember how good the previous game was. The visual difference between PS5 and PS4 isn’t as deep as in Horizon Forbidden West, but you’ll easily notice the visual improvements that make the settings more impressive.
However, the PS5 features several game modes and whether on a 60Hz or 120Hz screen, you’ll have the potential to improve the performance of God of War: Ragnarök.
Performance mode works at 4K dynamic (ranging between 1440p and 2160p, but spends most of its time at 1872p) and 60fps with excellent picture quality, while 4K and 30fps quality mode works with visual improvements. Using Temporal Anti-Aliasing with downsampling helps blur and even lower resolutions appear as 4K and get much better picture quality than their predecessor.
Although the two modes are very similar, there are differences in the processing of detail levels, and the quality mode shows more detail at a distance, but due to the way and the mastery with which it is done, it is not about cutting more targets, but the specially tuned scenes For the two modes, playing at a roughly constant 60fps is Digital Foundry’s recommendation. You have very stable performance and the graphical compromises are minimal.
On a 120Hz screen, you can play God of War: Ragnarök at 40fps with 4K dynamic resolution that can drop to 1800p in quality mode, while performance mode runs at 1440p. The 30 fps and 40 fps quality modes share the same graphic quality, as do the 60 fps and HFR modes share the same visual quality, and it is recommended to choose 120 Hz modes on a compatible monitor.
Quality mode on a 120Hz screen unlocks 60fps and lets you bypass that, as you spend most of your time between 80fps and 90fps. Digital Foundry recommends running performance mode at 120Hz with VRR enabled, on compatible monitors. However, you must definitely have an active VRR, otherwise it’s better to play at 60fps.
Regarding the differences between the PS5 and PS4, it was revealed that while the game does not display loading screens when played continuously, loading a save on the PS5 takes 10 seconds, compared to 30 seconds on the PS4 Pro.
