A trip to the supermarket is increasingly costing Portuguese people's pockets: but this phenomenon does not end at the border, and in the neighboring country the complaints are similar – especially if the trolley contains olive oil, which in 2024 will be 72% more expensive than a year ago. , making it one of the most expensive staples in your shopping cart. According to the Spanish edition “HuffPost”, the increase is so significant that many Spanish families have begun to substitute cheaper options, such as sunflower oil, a product that can cost 1.92 euros in supermarkets in Spain.

At Alcampo – part of the Auchan group – a one-litre bottle of sunflower oil from the Spanish origin brand Coosol has been a “trick” for many Spanish families. Although most people don't consider sunflower oil a total substitute for olive oil, it can be a great addition in the kitchen – used for preparations that require milder flavors, allowing you to leave out olive oil for other types of preparations or raw consumption. .

However, it's not just the sunflower oil that beats the competition: the price of the olive oil is also competitive, compared to the prices of other competing chains – you can find a one-litre bottle of Auchan olive oil for €8.95, which is lower value than those offered by the chains. Other competing supermarkets.

Among these stores is Lidl, which has already reduced the price of olive oil in its supermarkets, selling a two-litre bottle of olive oil at €18.99 (€9.49 per litre).

On the other hand, Mercadona sells its most popular olive oil at 15.7 euros per liter, that is, it is an extra virgin olive oil bearing the seal of quality which has also been awarded, which explains the price difference.
