JK Rowling reveals in new podcast that Portuguese ex-husband hid ‘Harry Potter’ manuscript – Observer

JK Rowling revealed in a new game Podcast that Jorge Arantes, whom she married from 1992 to 1993, hid the manuscript of Harry Potter to prevent the writer from abandoning it.

Rowling met Arantes in 1992, shortly after she moved to Porto. The two married in October 1992 and divorced just over a year later, in December 1993. The author described her marriage to the former Portuguese journalist as the “biggest failure” of her life and the period that followed as one of the most difficult.

In the Podcast “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling”released this Tuesday, the author, who wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone While living in Porto, it is reported that Arantes hid the manuscript of the book at one point to prevent Rowling from leaving it.

“He knew what the manuscript meant to me because at one point he took it from me and hid it. It was his hostage.” Megan Phelps Roperbuilder Podcast. Rowling, fearful that Arrantz would destroy the document, began secretly transcribing it.

“When I realized it was really going to disappear, I started taking out a few pages each day, just a few pages so he wouldn’t notice that something was missing, and I photographed them.” quoted times. “Gradually, an illustrated manuscript grew and slept in the guest bedroom closet. I thought he’d burn it if I couldn’t take it all with me.”

JK Rowling admitted that preserving the manuscript was a priority because “it meant so much”. “The only thing I prioritized after that was my daughter, but she was still inside me at the time, so she was safe.”

Jessica Arantes was born in July 1993, a few months before her parents separated and the writer returned to the UK, where she finished writing. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The book was published in the UK in June 1997 and in Portugal in October 1999.
